AI Overviews, AI Mode and query fan-out
AI Overviews summarise some searches and link to supporting pages. AI Mode supports deeper questions, comparisons and follow-ups. Google’s May 2025 announcement explains how AI Mode can investigate several subtopics at once. It describes a product launch, not a promise that every feature is available in every account today.
Query fan-out means generating related searches to explore a question. Retrieval-augmented generation, or RAG, means using retrieved information to ground an answer. Neither concept provides a list of secret keywords that guarantees a citation.
Check eligibility before chasing visibility
A page needs to be indexed and eligible for a Search snippet to appear as a supporting link in Google’s AI features. Access does not guarantee indexing or selection. Review accidental noindex instructions, blocked crawling and important information that visitors cannot actually read.
The newer Search Console guidance adds a site-level Search generative AI control. It offers inclusion, exclusion and inheritance from a parent property. Inclusion is the default where there is no parent override. Check the effective setting for your property; do not assume a child property has an independent setting.
- Open the correct verified property in Search Console.
- Inspect an important course or service URL and resolve indexing problems.
- Review Settings → Search generative AI, including inherited choices.
- Check that the public page shows its essential facts without requiring login.
What useful, original content looks like
Google’s people-first guidance asks whether a page helps its intended audience and adds something beyond a rewrite of other pages. E-E-A-T describes experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness; it is not a score you insert into a website.
For a training page, useful evidence could be an actual assignment brief, an explanation of assessment, a dated demonstration or an approved student work sample. For an agency page, explain what the client receives and how decisions are made. Use real evidence when available; never fill the gap with invented campaign results.
| Reader’s question | Information to provide |
|---|---|
| Can I fit the course into my routine? | 2.5 months, 2 hours daily, extra practice and batches on the 1st and 15th; confirm the specific class time. |
| What will I pay? | The confirmed flagship fee is ₹30,000. Explain separately any paid tools or practice advertising costs. |
| What can I learn to do? | Show a keyword map, an ad plan, a landing-page outline and a measurement exercise. |
| Will this guarantee a job? | Explain career options, portfolio work and further practice without a placement or salary promise. |
Make the useful information easy to reach
A readable website needs descriptive headings, real navigation links and pages that work on a phone. Keep essential information in page text, with images or videos that support the explanation. Use consistent preferred URLs and link related lessons from relevant services.
For local businesses, keep website contact facts aligned with the Google Business Profile. Product businesses should also maintain their relevant product information. These are ongoing information-quality tasks, not one-time AI ranking tricks.
- Give each page a distinct purpose and a descriptive title.
- Link the main course to focused Google Ads, Meta Ads, SEO and AI lessons.
- Replace broken buttons with working destinations and label forms clearly.
- Use structured data only for facts visible on the page; special AI schema is not required.
Which AI search tactics should you avoid?
Google’s optimization guide says Google Search does not use llms.txt for ranking, does not require content to be split into tiny chunks, and does not require a special writing style or special structured data for AI search. Buying artificial mentions is not a sound substitute for useful content.
Do not create hundreds of nearly identical pages for imagined fan-out queries. Choose page length and structure around the reader’s task. A concise answer can be excellent; a complex decision may need a longer explanation.
Measure visibility and business outcomes separately
Google’s current Search Console documentation describes a Generative AI performance report for Search. It reports AI-feature impressions, with page, country, date and device views. Google’s page notes worldwide rollout on 31 August 2026; a property without sufficient AI impressions may still not show the report.
The broader Search performance report includes AI-feature activity within Web search. Use that alongside website analytics and your enquiry records. An AI impression is not a click, a qualified lead or a sale. Do not label every organic enquiry an “AI lead”.
The older AI-features page explains the broader Web report; the newer dedicated report documentation adds more detail. Keep both in context rather than repeating an outdated claim that AI visibility can never be reported separately.
Apply the lesson to your industry
These examples apply the same principle to different customer decisions. They are not claims that a particular template will earn AI citations.
| Business | Helpful evidence to add | Meaningful next action |
|---|---|---|
| Builder | Current project facts, approved plans, location details and clear availability dates. | A relevant site-visit request. |
| Educational institute | Fees, schedule, syllabus, learning method and sample assignments. | A suitable demo enquiry. |
| Doctor or hospital | Accurate specialties, doctor details, facility information and clinician-reviewed explanations. | An appointment enquiry through an appropriate channel. |
| Exporter or manufacturer | Verified specifications, capacity, packaging, MOQ and target-market information. | A buyer enquiry with product and quantity requirements. |
| Local service | Actual service coverage, working hours, process and genuine photographs. | A service request that matches the business. |
A practical four-week content plan
This is our suggested work plan, not Google’s prescribed schedule or a promised ranking timeline. If you want practical support, bring one page and a clear business goal to a demo lecture or digital audit.
- Week 1: choose one important page, list unanswered customer questions and inspect its technical eligibility.
- Week 2: add verified facts, one original example and helpful links. Remove unsupported claims.
- Week 3: test mobile navigation, forms and contact actions; review your public business information.
- Week 4: review the available Search Console and enquiry evidence. Decide the next improvement from what visitors need.
Frequently asked questions
Can anyone guarantee a top position in Google AI answers?
No. Google decides when to show an AI feature and which sources to include. The work is to improve eligibility, usefulness and discoverability, then measure what happens.
Are AEO and GEO different from SEO?
They are common labels for work on answer and generative search visibility. Google’s guide treats optimization for its AI search experiences as part of SEO. Evaluate deliverables rather than the label.
Does query fan-out mean I need a page for every question?
No. Group connected questions into a useful page. Create a separate page when a distinct topic needs real depth, not simply to repeat keywords.
Does an AI search audit change my Search Console settings automatically?
No. An audit can identify checks and recommendations. Any account change requires suitable access and an agreed action. This guide does not inspect or change your account.
Are AI-generated articles automatically penalised?
Google’s guidance focuses on quality and purpose. AI can assist the work; publishing low-value material at scale to manipulate Search can violate spam policies.
Does an agent-friendly website automatically rank better?
No. Clear controls and accessible structure help people and browser agents use a website. They are not a guaranteed Google AI ranking advantage.
